TAMU Corpus Christi 2006 Undergraduate Research Symposium

On October 7, 2006, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi completed their very successful 6th Annual Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecture and Undergraduate Research Symposium. There were 18 student poster presentations this year, and the overall quality was better than ever! All of the students can be proud of their accomplishments. The awards competition was very difficult to judge because of the quality of the research and presentations. The following are the research presentation awards:

First Place ($100) Sean M. Thompson - "Seed germination of two Texas Gulf Coast Helianthus specieson clay and sand"
Second Place ($75) Sarah Bayer - "Effect of ethanol and pore water exposures on two populations of the grass shrimp Hippolyte clarki"
Third Place ($50) Felischa Cullins - "Historical transport of NORM in the Mabel-New Superior (MNS) Mine"
Honorable Mention ($25) Megan Thompson - "Combinatorial selection of monothio DNA apatamers targeted against the envelope protein of dengue virus"

The annual research symposium was established so that undergraduate students doing research have an opportunity to present their work prior to presenting at state, regional, national and international Conferences. Student’s research is funded by LSAMP, NSF UTEP Model Institutions of Excellence subcontract, and internally by my incentive funds. The latter two sources of funds have allowed us to increase the number of students doing undergraduate research.
